Burlesque

Alexandra Theatre
*** “full of fizz”
Burlesque, a show which has the potential of being a fan favourite and a bit of a cult classic. There is a story, there is a spectacle, some super vocals and plenty of feathers and razzmatazz. For the main the sound was spot on serving us some of the best hits from the movie, plus some new material.
The narrative centres around Ali who heads for the lights of New York to seek out her mother Tess, who runs a struggling variety burlesque club. Gracie O’Brien delivers a standout performance as Ali, banging some wonderful numbers as she slowly gains confidence under the stage lights. Opposite her as Tess is the icy Faye Brooks, a feisty portrayal, full of pace and fizz.
The tension and balance of power is somewhat underwhelming and lacking in any threat. The jeopardy is lacking and falls flat at times. The dialogue zips along politely interrupted by the jaunty burlesque numbers.
The curtain up time was a little delayed and perhaps was a marker for things to come, there is a slight feeling of underdevelopment throughout.
But the songs soared and the warmth is tangible.
Go and have some fizz. Runs at the Alexandra all week.
