Kinky Boots

Curve Leicester and then on national tour.

“Steps up and Scores” ***** Five Stars

Kinky Boots is full of surprises from its conception as a BBC documentary hidden away on BBC2 about troubles at a shoe factory, and then a Hollywood film, and then a Broadway and West-End musical. Both big winners at The Tonys and Olivier Awards. And now a new Made at the Curve production prior to an extensive UK tour. And the same wonderfully fresh surprises are still in evidence in this warm and inclusive Nikolai Foster production.

With the sudden death of his father young Charlie Price must step up and take on the running of a failing Northampton shoe factory, much to his fiancé Nicola’s disappointment. She has much bigger plans for them both down in London.

But Charlie persists and through a couple of incidents finds himself watching a drag troupe in a London club. Lola and her Angels. A footwear niche market plan is hatched. The main narrative is the stepping around of the design and eventual production of the boot, and the impact Lola has on the factory workers in Northampton, particularly on the rather narrow-minded Don.

Eventually prejudices are settled, and they all work together to make the Milan fashion show a success.

Dan Partridge is a superb Charlie, a character with the biggest story arc to navigate, this he does with a clever mix of grace and grit and with the addition of some admirable vocals. ‘I’m not my father’s son’ is a soaring highlight. And talking about stunning vocals Courtney Bowman as factory worker Lauren is not one to be left in the shadows, she makes the most of every moment she has on stage, a brilliantly observed portrayal.

In truth the catwalk and the spotlight belong to Johanannes Radebe he captured and demanded our attention and he very rightly received with ease. His Lola is a cheeky and a sparkling delight and the Strictly favourite elevates the choreography to new heights. He steps up and scores with every number.

The warming tonic is just what is needed on a cold January night, and will no doubt continue to glow throughout its extensive UK tour. Step along and see it soon.
