It is over 36 years since its premiere, and Miss Saigon has cemented its place as one of musical theatre’s most popular and enduring works. Despite some criticism of its plot the sheer drama and passion of the story continues to draw audiences, and the show will be touring into next year .It was a full house at the Alexandra this week and the cast were given a deserved standing ovation at the end.

The new production directed by Jean-Pierre Van Der Spuy has taken a traditional approach with a good stage set constantly moving with fantastic lighting.

The set lighting and the music are fantastic, but they do not upstage the performance of the actors. Julianne Pundan as Kim is excellent tremendous vocals and wonderful acting. Playing opposite her is Chris played by Jack Kane again superb vocals.

Seann Miley Moore plays the role of the Engineer great comedy moments, but he also brings a dramatic edge to the character.

This all-new tour, directed by Jean-Pierre Van Der Spuy, follows the famed love story of Kim, a 17-year-old Vietnamese girl forced into sex work after her village is destroyed, and Chris, an endearing American marine determined to save Kim from her life in Saigon. After they are separated at the end of the Vietnam War, Kim resiliently bears Chris’s child alone and vows to reunite her son with his father in America.

The set and costume design by Andrew D. Edwards felt remarkably impressive for a touring show. It was a joy to witness the attention to detail, as the set effortlessly transformed the Alexandra stage into Saigon, Ho Chi Minh City, Atlanta, and Bangkok using a revolving stage that seamlessly adapted around large set pieces. While iconic elements such as the full moving helicopter were absent, the lower half of the vehicle was recreated effectively with a fresh design, and the striking image of soldiers being lifted into the air remained unforgettable.
