4 stars **** “hitting all the right chords”

A country music love story that strikes all the right chords.
This wonderful jukebox musical interweaves the topsy-turvy lives and careers of country music icons Johnny Cash and June Carter. We follow both characters from their early years to the point where they meet and fall in love. Both married with children before they meet, their journey towards love is full of obstacles: drink, drugs, fame, and their own egos. Their son, John Carter Cash, narrates the story, offering his perspective on events.
Cash’s music is a massive draw, with the production showcasing hit after hit alongside a fantastic live band. Many of the songs are performed directly to the audience, creating the feel of a live concert. A couple of tracks are woven naturally into the story, providing context for their inspiration, and it feels like there is room for even more of this. With such compelling characters, I would have liked to delve a little deeper into the drama, something the talented performers would have taken in their stride.
Christopher Ryan Grant is a fantastic Johnny Cash; his look, mannerisms, and most importantly his voice, are a wonderful tribute to the central character. I was also grateful to learn more about June Carter, brought to life in a brilliant performance by Christine Bianco, who is full of fun and vigour, with a fitting charisma and an incredible voice. The supporting cast are very good, although they felt a little underutilised, with strong performances from Anne-Marie Wojna, and Chomba S.Taulo.
Moving and musically rich, this production proves itself a strong and engaging piece of theatre. Anchored by a talented cast, the performances bring warmth, charisma, and authenticity to this love story. However, the narrative could benefit from some tightening to fully match the strength of the music. Overall, its heart, energy, and clear affection for the material make it thoroughly enjoyable. Not one to be missed. You’d be wise to catch it now before it becomes a must-see hit.
