REP THEATRE BIRMINGHAM
“A Magic night in the woods” ****
First thing to mention is this new production of arguably Shakespeare’s most popular comedy is a bag full of fun. It is William Shakespeare but not quite as we are used to it. Songs, dances, and plenty of giggles. And what helps is the multi-rolling actors can belt out a tune, do a turn round the floor as well as setting up a lovely rapport with the enthusiastic Rep audience. It is a dazzling main stage debut for the Rep’s new artistic director Joe Murphy. The underlying feel throughout is young, and diverse and wonderfully lively.
The faithfulness to the local bard is still for the most part still evident, although the preamble about climate change was a rather confusing and unnecessary curtain raiser. There is fair amount of gender swapping going on, a significant alteration when he comes to the lovers, but it works. Adam Carver is in sparkling form as Puck, showing off some admirable singing talent.
The mechanicals are astutely cast and play off each other with a comical ease, the play within a play moment towards the conclusion is a tour de force.
Joe Murphy has arrived at the Rep and things may well be set for a shake-up. No doubt the path will not always run smooth, but the tenure has begun well.
